EGRETS NESTING AT IBBAGAMUWA
  2008-05-20

Hi Freinds,

I got a call from one of my good friends who happen to go pass Ibbagamuwa for a meeting and had seen huge flocks of egrets, herons nesting by the road side trees. Mostly with newly hatched chicks. He told me that it was just touching distance from the road and that a 500 telephoto would be a too powerful lens and discouraged me not to go as the nests were all covered with branches and sticks and will not guarantee me any good shots due to the branches obstructing the nests. I was anyway going to be traveling there in a few days later to attend a family get-together in Sigirya and I stopped by to see whether i could get any good shots i the mid afternoon on my way to sigiriya. Fortunately i noticed there was one particular nest with a no branches covering from about 100 odd nests...so it was a 1 to 100 shot and decided to come back again early one day after my trip to try this nest out which had 3 new born chicks. So, i set out on vesak day early from Colombo around 4am and reached the site at 6am and I managed to get a few decent pictures, 2 of them are shown here. Photography is a lot about planning and my planning worked to my advantage.
